The nights are drawing in and the weather is getting colder. For the first year cadets though, it's time to dig out the sunglasses, because they're off to a field trip to Mars! What will await the cadets when they get there? Only time will tell.
Back on Earth, the Preparatory School students have been extended an invitation to go and tour the main Academy campus. Will they take up the chance to go and see where they might end up in the future? And what will they think of it if they do?

((OOC: So sorry again for the slow reply! The appearance of the panel was inspired by Stargate. o_q))
He nodded in response to what she said. He wasn't a person of many words, and he learned a nod was a good way to relay agreement. There was something wrong with the “sand” as well – actually, it wasn't sand – and she seemed to realise it too. The language was unrecogniseable to him as well, though he was minoring in xenolinguistics so one of the things he was to do might have to do with deciphering that.
“You want to try taking apart the panel while I see if anything happens if I remove a vent cover?” Uli asked. Kalath nodded, and moved to the panel, cautiously. The panel was circular, with a button in the middle, and several buttons with unrecogniseable glyphs surrounding it. He couldn't make heads or tails of it. He tried pushing a few buttons. The buttons lit up as he pushed them. After he'd pushed four, though, the light faded away.
Mechanical error? Or is that supposed to happen? he thought. If only I had something to compare this language to.

Elyse noticed him nod to everything she had said, which was slightly comforting and odd at the same time. Mostly as she was hoping he had a plan, and would say something. As she normally preferred to be the quiet and pull something type, and to have others mention what they were planning. Seems this would be a lesson in more than survival and working with a Cardassian skills. Apparently she would have to say out a plan as well as she certainly did not fully trust whatever Kalath was up to. Working with and trusting someone was totally different and that went double for Cardassians.
What she missed the rather odd reversal in the natural order of things as she was concentrating on the mission. As in the war it was usually better to just nod to Cardassians than actually say something. Maybe it had more to do with how Cardassians acted than relations between the two species. She had no idea as she pushed that odd train of thought from her mind as she had to concentrate on the mission and more specifically on the vent cover in front of her.
Putting her fingers on both the side and top of one of the corners of the vent she tried to pull it from the wall. She would have said the thing was rusty as she felt some of the of sides scrape off the wall and almost disintegrate in her hands. However the wall and the vent surrounding it were not exactly made of metal, they seemed to be some sort of clay material. Like the side of a wall of a cave if caves had a walls made of hardened clay.
Looking over she saw Kalath pushing buttons and make lights go on, and off oddly. Not that she could detect a pattern in the sequences he used mostly as she had been concentrating on the vent not him. Hopefully that would not haunt her in the end as she decided she had to concentrate on providing an alternative way out of this mess. An alternative that did not involve the words End Program as she would naturally have herself fetched from her by medical before saying those two words.
Elyse said " Try removing the panel the wiring might be easier to understand than the interface. " They had to work together and as she pulled at the vent cover as it was sliding slightly she was not sure if that feeling was an illusion. As it could have been the clay getting on her hands making her think the thing was moving. In reality that panel and doorway was probably the most logical method out of this mess. Mostly as it was also in the direction of there target she realizes as she took out her pad and looked at it.
Then she realized she could possibly use the light to figure out this vent cover. Which did not look to have anything actually attaching it to the walls and seemed to be just held in place by age and being there. It was probably just like the cover on a maintenance tube. Which when they stuck there usually one easy solution and even better if no one was looking over your shoulder. So she stood up rather quickly and gave the vent a kick, causing a rather interesting echo around the room they were in.

"Okay," he replied, to her suggestion, and trying to do as she asked, but it was set up so that you'd have to remove each individual button to get to it, and you'd end up with a mess. Or...well, he had a hunch. He glanced around, hardly paying attention to what Uli was doing since he had to concentrate here, and noticed something on the far wall. He walked over to it. It was dark here, and he had no light. He moved his fingers over the first part, and realised, using his photographic memory, that it was one of the keys on the pad. He felt the others, committing them to memory before returning.
He pressed the buttons in sequence, then took a guess and pressed the large unmarked button in the middle. He looked up and noticed that the door had slid open. Kalath gave the Cardassian equivalent of a shrug. He was a little disappointed that he hadn't really gotten to work with anything there, however.

Elyse noticed how Kalath was comparing the door to something on the other side of the room. Not that she thought about it to much as she was concentrating on her own problem the vent. More importantly the echo the vent had just made made her wonder what was on the other end of the tube. She did not even notice that Kalath got the door right away as she pulled the broken vent cover out the tube. Reaching into the tube she noticed it had more of a metallic feeling and much more sturdy than the wall felt.
As she looked over and was about to mention that to Kalath she noticed the door was open. Considering the two exits as options she preferred the door, but was happy she had two options. Elyse asked " What was the combination that worked. " Wondering, though she had a feeling that Kalath might lie to her as he was a Cardassian and naturally her instincts said not to trust him. Though she was expected to try or make a show of it as she was sure this simulation was being watched.
Then she took a half step through the door past him. Far enough she could see the room seemed empty yet not so far that if Kalath showed her the sequence she would miss it. As she was rather curious about how he opened the door even if she was fairly sure she could have undone that panel rather quickly and opened it by looking at the circuits.

As the door opened, the musty smell of an area that hadn’t opened in thousands of years reached his nostrils. He instinctively whipped out his tricorder and began to scan the air; there was no sign of harmful particles. Not that they would use a hologram to harm him but it was smart to scan. After all, if this had been a real situation...
Kalath pointed them out with his hand; he had, of course, memorised them and could recall them again if necessary. There was, from here, a long corridor. It led to darkness, but there was no other way they could go. “Let’s stick together,” he said. “One could easily get lost in this darkness.” As they moved through the corridor, they found it led to another doorway. This one had a similar device, but the door had cracked; it was big enough for both of them to climb through.
After Kalath had scanned what lay ahead, they leaped through, into a large, dark chamber which appeared to be a labyrinth. “We should leave a trail so we know where we went and how to get back,” Kalath suggested to Uli.

She looked over noticing the buttons he pressed, realizing that as he did it she hoped that they were in the same sequence on the next door. As all she could remember was the sequence as the shaped did not manage to sink her mind as she was observing her surroundings more than the door panel. Kalath opened it once, so hopefully he could open the next one as if not her idea of taking the panel across would be fully implemented.
She should have brought more than just the padd to the simulation.
However she had not yet figured out what was appropriate to bring when, except a uniform was always required. Though what she was rather sure she would never figure out was the simple fact Cardassians were not always out to get you. She just nodded when he suggested they stick together. Not because she thought it would be a good idea for both there sakes, or that it would be bad to be separated, but for the simple fact that she would rather keep an eye on him as one less surprise to attack her.
A trail like bread crumbs or something of the sort, though she doubted the slight amount of lint in her pockets would help the cause. Elyse said " We could scratch arrows into the walls or floor as it seems to be made of a clay material. " Though she had no idea how one would see them exactly so she planned to just try to keep track of where she was. Then she looked at her padd and said " Seems whatever we are looking for is ahead, though I doubt it is in here so we probably need to get above ground again. " Not that she really believed what she said, saying it more because she hoped it was true considering her dislike of small places.

“We could scratch arrows into the walls or floor as it seems to be made of clay material,” she suggested. He nodded, glad that his comrade had thought of that.
“We should dig them deep enough so that they can’t be easily erased,” he said. Way to state the obvious, Kalath, he thought to himself. She then pointed that whatever they were looking for was probably ahead. “It would seem that way, yes,” he replied. And so they made their way forward, marking their trail as they progressed.
They were making good distance when Kalath stopped. He thought he’d heard something, though his hearing wasn’t that great. He flipped out his tricorder, scanning around him. The tricorder was definitely picking something up.
“I’m detecting three humanoid lifesigns,” Kalath said, glancing over at Uli. They’d been given fake phasers to use in the simulation; either these lifesigns would be hostile or not. Kalath was a naturally suspicious person, but for all he knew they could be possible allies.

As she kept helping to make arrows on the floor using her foot to scrape the arrows into the clay like material of the floor she was not so sure this was a good idea. While she wanted to keep track of where they were going and came from it also would give anyone else a path to where they came from. What she did not even bother thinking about was probably a more annoying manner of how long after this she would be polishing her shoes. Even as she looked down at them and they were more familiar to her than any other time when she had ever worn them.
She kept walking besides him hearing something that was definitely not the humm of machinery, and stopped as he did. Part of her debated looking at her padd, but it seemed Kalath was more prepared than she was. Apparently the concept of survival in Starfleet terms involved tricorders and fake phasers, both of which she did not have. Elyse said " At this point I doubt that two entry ways were used due to the size of the suite so I am guessing it is part of whatever program we are in. "
Though when she thought survival she thought more of natural survival as hostile lifeforms would have to make her consider that survival in Starfleet terms also implied possible combat. Not that she was phased by the realization remembering the amount of trouble she had managed to get out of with less on her. Plus unlike in the war she had three meals a day and proper sleep for days prior so was at her best. A definite change from her prior experience in combat situations, which with her luck always seemed to end up happening when she was least prepared.
Looking over at Kalath she wondered if he had any combat experience at all. Naturally there was no way for her to know this but at least he had a phaser. Which means all she would have to worry about was herself, as well as the simple fact that she could not really trust a Cardassian. Elyse said " Some of the structure looks old so don't be afraid to aim above lifeforms if they turn out to be hostile. "
