Post by Cadet William Hume on Jun 7, 2009 21:30:01 GMT
Character's Name: William Hume
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Physical Profile Hume has a slight build, though he looks even thinner than he is given his above average height. Like most Romulans he has brown eyes and dark brown to black hair. His skin tone is fairer than most of his kind, potentially due to growing up in in more hospitable climates than Romulus. Hume is a full Romulan.
Birthplace: USS Idaho
Career track: Security
Personality:
William Hume is a sarcastic, cynical though ultimately tender individual. After years of struggling, and failing to fit in with human and Federation life, Hume tends to keep most people at a distance with a cynical outside edge. As a result of the greater emotional capacity of the Vulcanoid races that humans, he also tends to swing to greater emotional extremes, whether they be anger, joy, depression or love. Mostly though he tends to keep to himself, and has yet to build any friendships at the Academy.
Having spent a great deal of his youth having only himself to depend on Hume has trouble with both teamwork and following orders. If he believes he knows how to do something better than someone else he will simply do it his way, even if they are in a position of authority over him. This often got him in trouble at his previous schools, and continues to hamper his progress at the Academy. However he is extremely loyal to those that have earned his respect, and exceptionally brave willing to put himself in danger for those he cares about, even though he may complain about it.
Hume is exceptionally intelligent, though he has done poorly in school for social reasons. His intelligence has not been focused towards academics, and instead operates similar to what used to be called 'streets smarts' on Earth, as a kind of on the fly cognitive ability able to adapt to most situations. He is a quick learner when interested, and a very slow one when not. Since his intelligence has rarely resulted in academic success he tends to believe himself rather dim, which is why he has chosen to focus on security, assuming that his greater physical strenght and willingness to fight make it a good choice.
Hume has an appreciation of human comedy, and often will pretend to be Vulcan to amuse himself. He dislikes being judged based on his Romulan heritage, and is unfailingly honest simply to ensure that he never lives up to the image of a sneaky Romulan. Hume enjoys the ancient Earth sport of football (soccer) and old human culture.
Background and History:
Though William Hume knows little about his parents, it is known that they supported unification with Vulcan even prior to the arrival of Ambassador Spock on Romulus. However since this viewpoint was illegal at the time, and they were discovered they were forced to flee Romulus. Hoping to escape to Vulcan they, along with ten other supporters of unification, took a runabout and headed toward Federation space. Intercepted by a Warbird the ship was attacked and chased into the neutral zone where it's engines where disabled, and it's life support system. The Warbird, which had crossed into Federation space, cloaked and retreated with the arrival of the USS Idaho.
The crew of the Idaho found that while there appeared to be no survivors, due to the environmental systems failing, one of the Romulan women was pregnant and the unborn child was still alive. An emergency birth in the Idaho's medical bay brought the Romulan child into the world. Unable to give the child back to the Romulans given the state of relations between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, the ship's medical officer Vanessa Hume adopted the baby and raised it as a son along side her husband Jonathan Hume the ship's Chief Operations Officer. When the Hume's were reassigned to Starfleet Command on Earth, they moved to London where William was first entered into school.
Though William found that he could pass for a Vulcan, he tended to be too honest for that and not a good enough actor to do so. Thus his being Romulan quickly got out and he was constantly getting into fights. He never did well in school, either socially or academically, though his intelligence scores were always very high. He managed to apply himself in the later years of high school, and bring his grades up so he could enter Starfleet Academy which had been his wish all his life. In Starfleet he hoped to be able to repay the people who had saved him, and find a place where he belonged which clearly was not Earth.

Sample Roleplay: The comm system beeped again, and William Hume set down the PADD that he had been studying. He glanced at the door, squinting his eyes as he tried to see through it. Of course he could not, but he could also not fathom who would be on the other side. He had developed a reputation as a loner, mostly because he was actively trying to avoid the sort of fights that he used to get into in public school. Being a Romulan made it easy, nobody wanted much to do with him anyway, so he had so far been successful. He went to class, did the work and participated in the role play exercises that were supposed to teach them how to act when on a real starship.
Who could it be? His sister Vanessa, named after her mother who had adopted William a few years after her birth, had graduated the Academy the year before but was still on Earth as she waited a starship assignment. She had been his only visitor at the Academy, since their parents had been reassigned to various ships. However he doubted it was her, she tended to call first knowing that he always hated surprises.
Though he was tempted to ask who it was on the other side of the door, he knew that no matter who it was he would be required to let them in. So he sighed, stood and said aloud, "Come."
