Like schools and universities in the twenty-first century, the twenty-fourth century Starfleet Academy starts the new academic year in September. From there, cadets follow a twelve month cycle, completing a minimum of three years before graduation. Most courses last four years.
The following schedule is an example, that a typical cadet might follow in four years at the Academy.

January - return for second term
April - two week holiday
May / June - first year exams
June (end) - career track initial choice
July and August - two month placement with 20,000 report
Year Two
September - progress to second year, confirmation of career track
November - winter exam period, two weeks

Year Three

Mid-July and August - placement exercise
Year Four
September - progress to year four, select postgraduate options if applicable, start dissertation

Notes:
First year placement can be arranged either by Starfleet or personally by the cadet. Cadets are required to submit a 20,000 word report at the end of the placement, which includes a 5,000 word justification of the placement and a summary of work undertaken. These placements are often instrumental in helping a cadet choose their future career path.
Career tracks can be chosen at any point from registration at the Academy, but a preliminary choice must have been made by the end of June in their first year. Cadets can choose to join the Command, Medical, Science, Engineering, Intelligence or Security tracks. Some courses will be common to more than one track, and some tracks will require postgraduate study or more than three years before graduation. Before a cadet chooses a track they wear a generic grey jumpsuit, after they sport a stripe of department colour relative to the track they have chosen.
Second year training exercises will not be the first time that a cadet has been off world for a training programme, however at two months duration they will be the longest that the cadet has served off world as yet. The exercises test skills such as survival, combat, logic/reasoning, team work and problem solving. The exercises are assessed, and passing them is a requirement to move on to third or further years.
