Before entering the supply outpost, Dakbar took a better look at the quarry in the distance. It was, as had been detailed, half filled with rust-colored water. The edges of the quarry appeared slick and muddy. What could they possibly be mining there? Dakbar laughed to himself, picturing an Admiral sitting at a pottery wheel with a lump of the red clay.
"Ropes, stakes, and safety equipment," he said to Nichole, then turned and addressed Kathryn for the first time, "underwater gear." He looked at his PADD, "I'll get the survey instruments. Everyone grab some towels and a pair of spiked boots." He collected the instruments, a shovel and an emergency kit, then selected a pair of boots that would fit. "I'll meet you at the quarry."
He stood on the edge of the quarry, staring into it. How easy it would be to lose ones step and fall into the water. With a tricorder, he located the first beacon, then put a pair of binoculars to his eyes and began to scan the quarry, watching the digital readings fly by at the bottom of the view. This was not going to be easy. Two hours. He laughed darkly. Starfleet always put impossible time frames on their cadets...

Kathryn waited until Dakbar was out of earshot before she turned to Nichole.
"Underwater gear?" she said. "That's the best he can manage? Well, this mission is obviously going to be terribly civil." She rolled her eyes, and then went and collected the equipment that Dakbar had told her to get. Rebreathers, air tanks and wetsuits, since she had no idea how far down they would be going. In truth, Kathryn was looking forward to using the dive kit and hoped they'd be doing most of their work underwater; beneath the murkyness, she could feel at least he had a reason to not speak to her.
"His highness awaits," she muttered to herself, then smiled at Nichole and headed out into the Martian sun. Dakbar was standing on the edge of the quarry, surveying the landscape. Kathryn assumed that he'd located the first beacon already. She put the equipment down on the floor; it was heavy.
"So," she said, trying to push aside her personal feelings, not very successfully, for the good of their assignment. "Where are we going first?"

"So, Where are we going first?"
He looked down at the gear, "is it your intention to add sand to the rebreather," he asked, "because I have yet to see anyone else do what you have done." He moved away from her, leaving her to sort it out. "The first beacon is halfway around the quarry. We should get moving."
Dakbar soaked in the Martian heat. It fit his mood perfectly. He hoped the water was warm, too. While humans would have begun to sweat during the walk, Dakbar's skin remained perfectly dry. He was enjoying the short jaunt around the quarry. His training kicked in at some point and he looked back to make sure the others were following.
At the proper point, he stopped and took another reading. The beacon was just below them, somewhere under the water. He stripped down to his dark tank top and briefs, feeling the warmth even better on his exposed skin. Suddenly, he was reminded of Halloween and his mood darkened even further.

Nichole simply gave a nod at the instructions given to her. Nichole could not help but pick up the tone and the eye roll from Kathryn. Little things like that were hard to miss, even if they were trying to be concealed.
Civil? Why do I somehow doubt that? Nichole thought to herself hoping she would not have to do the whole childish 'tell so and so'. She finished collecting everything she had been instructed to and walked over to the group.
She saw as Kathryn lay the underwater equipment on the ground. Nichole couldn't really much blame her, if you weren't used to carrying all that stuff it would feel heavy. Though she had thought that Dakbar could have been a little nicer about it.
Nichole shifted her weight a little to keep the gear she had gotten well balanced.
"Ya know, you may be the team leader, but I don't believe that gives you the right to even mildly talk down to a teammate. There is a proper way and an improper way to correct someone."
Nichole said evenly. She hadn't sounded angry, she just hadn't appreciated how Dakbar had got on Kathryn's case no matter how mild it had been for a simple mistake not bothering to take into account the weight limit.
They weren't Starfleet officers yet, they were in training. Now if they had been officers Nichole would have been fine with what Dakbar had said and the way he had said it.
They all had a job to do and had to work as a team to accomplish the task, but that would not help or happen if they all ended up at one another. It didn't take an investigator to know there was something going on.
"If either one of you has a problem with the other I would suggest getting everything out in the air now, before something erupts like a volcano or someone ends up in tears."
Nichole couldn't help but voice her opinion. It was, after all, the type of person she was.

Kathryn scowled as soon as Dakbar had turned around and stormed off. Just yours, if you're going to be so sour, she thought, darkly. She had little choice but to pick up the equipment again. She looked at Nichole almost apologetically as the other girl gave her advice.
"Don't let it worry you," she said. "There's no reasoning with him. As for the consequences you predict... well, he's already done his yelling and I my crying, so I suppose it's a bit late, however good your advice is." She smiled a little. "And it is good, I know." She shifted the weight in her arms. "Come on, he'll just get grumpier if we're slow."
Giving Nichole a final smile, Kathryn set off. The equipment was definitely heavy enough, but Kathryn was determined not to let it get to her. Whilst she might not be most culturally savvy or the most technically minded, she knew that she had a strength and agility that far exceeded what people would expect to look at her.
She arrived at the edge of the quarry where Dakbar was currently stripping off. He was standing in a tank top and briefs, and Kathryn suddenly realised that she was going to have to do likewise if she wanted to get her wetsuit on. Great. Of all the people she wanted to be undressing in front of, Dakbar had to be last on the list.
She put down the equipment again, this time making sure that the rebreathers were on the top of the pile. Then, she unzipped her jacket, folding it into a neat pile on the floor. It was just uniform she wore underneath, a tank top, but still she felt unusually exposed in it. Still, the walk around the quarry had been at a fair pace and with everything she'd been carrying she found herself rather warm. The skin on her arms and neck glistened a little with the beads of sweat produced by the exertion. The jumpsuit trousers, she decided, could stay despite her heat, unless he told her she had to take them off.
"I assume we're diving for this one then?" she said, trying her best to be civil, even if he wasn't going to be.

"If either one of you has a problem with the other I would suggest getting everything out in the air now, before something erupts like a volcano or someone ends up in tears."
Dakbar waited until Nichole had finished before he spoke. He looked down at her, his eyes studying her face. He remembered the time they had shared in the library when they were both brand new at the academy and he knew she was intelligent and full of life. "There is much you don't understand," he said, simply, before he left to make his trek around the edge of the quarry as described earlier.
Kathryn joined him there and her eyes on him wasn't lost to the Cardassian.
"I assume we're diving for this one then?"
"Not like that, we're not," he said, gesturing to her attire, "there's no way you'll be getting the wetsuit over your trousers." He narrowed his eyes, "besides," he said, "wearing hardly anything at all should be no problem for you. Go ahead... I'll wait." He crossed his arms, staring right at her.

Nichole really had the urge to say: 'Really? enlighten me why don't cha?' However she held her tongue as she only suspected it would make things worse. Nichole carefully placed the items she was holding on the ground about two feet away from Dakbar. "Hold it missy." Nichole said to Kathryn. She picked up a towel that had been instructed to get from the start.
"Sorry, but a strip tease, music or not, is not going to happen on my watch. You just turn around." Nichole gently waved a hand a Dakbar. Nichole then turned to Kathryn. "Here," Nichole opened up and held the towel up to allow Kathryn some privacy to change. "Anytime you're ready."

"Besides," he said, "wearing hardly anything at all should be no problem for you. Go ahead... I'll wait."
Her eyes widened. What a thing to say! What sort of girl was he trying to insinuate that she was? And he could talk. She'd seen him in that fountain on Halloween night, prancing around in practically nothing.
"Funny," she said, sharply, "I thought you just stripped off for dancing in fountains."
"Hold it missy. Sorry, but a strip tease, music or not, is not going to happen on my watch. You just turn around."
Kathryn didn't think she'd ever been so grateful for someone's intervention in her life. She gave Dakbar a defiant glare, then sent a thankful one in the direction of Nichole. Picking up the wetsuit, she stepped behind the towel. It wasn't much in the way of privacy, exactly, but it was better than standing there getting changed whilst Dakbar was staring at her like some predatory animal.
"Here. Anytime you're ready."
"Thanks," she muttered, then, very quickly, slipped off her trousers and pulled on the wetsuit. It wasn't the easiest item of clothing to get on, but if there was one thing that Kathryn did very well, it was clothes. She maneouvered the thing on very quickly, even managing to zip it up herself which required a certain amount of flexibility. "OK, I'm done," she said, to Nichole. "Do you want me to return the favour?" She reached out to take the towel from the other girl.

"Funny, I thought you just stripped off for dancing in fountains."
"I was not the one dancing," Dakbar snapped back.
"Sorry, but a strip tease, music or not, is not going to happen on my watch. You just turn around."
Dakbar rolled his eyes, "and when we are in a survival situation, are you going to provide modesty shields for all the troops?" He turned his back anyway, not wanting to get into a fight with Nichole. It was not her fight, after all. While the two women chatted, Dakbar donned his wetsuit. He was having the devil of a time with it, though. Looking at the sizing, he set his jaw. Once size too small. He glanced over at the women. Intentional? He wondered...
He sat down on the red sand, trying to pull the suit off of his legs but it was stuck halfway.

"Do you want me to return the favour?"
"Wouldn't mind at all." Nichole said with a smile as she handed over the towel, and picked up her wetsuit. Like Kathryn, Nichole unzipped her jacket. In that moment she couldn't help but wonder what the water would be like. It was sure to be different than that of Earth.
"and when we are in a survival situation, are you going to provide modesty shields for all the troops?"
Nichole laughed brightly. "Ya know, I think I could." Nichole shook her head yes. "Nichole Sullivan: AR, PI, SI, and inventor of AMPS! Yes, AMPS; Away Mission Privacy Shields! Providing coverage where and when you need it most, using the most sophisticated cloaking technology!"
Nichole lightly shrugged her shoulders with a laugh. "What do you think so far?"

"I was not the one dancing."
Kathryn glared back at him, unwilling to back down, not realising the significance of what he said.
"Like it's some big sin to try and make your friend laugh," she spat back, just before she disappeared behind the towel.
Having gotten changed, she swapped with Nichole to hold the towel, and smiled at her as she replied to Dakbar's surly question. At least with Nichole there to keep the mood light, maybe she and Dakbar wouldn't kill each other on this mission.

"Like it's some big sin to try and make your friend laugh."
Friend? Dakbar let out an exasperated breath. He glanced over at the two women, seeing only Kathryn's smooth legs under the towel. He stared at them, watching her feet dance in the sand as he forgot his own predicament for a moment.
"Away Mission Privacy Shields!"
"Hmm? What?" Dakbar glanced over at Nichole who was beaming. "Care to invent a way to remove this wetsuit," he quipped back at her. He started struggling with the suit, but it remained firmly stuck around his legs. "If I don't get out of here soon--"
He stared again. Kathryn's back was facing him, her body outlined by the tight wetsuit, leaving nothing to the imagination as she held the towel for Nichole. "...er... soon..."

Nichole finished changing, zipping up her wetsuit to as quick as possible as something in her brain clicked. She wasn't exact stupid, and had heard everything said by both ever since they had been grouped up. Well, well... Nichole tapped a finger to her chin as she looked at Dakbar.
Nichole held Kathryn by the wrist just for a moment, and spoke quietly to her. "You and I need to have a little chat about species dating and mating behavior." Nichole gently patted the top of Kathryn's hand she had been holding, and gave her a smile before moving out from behind the towel to help Dakbar.
"Dakbar, would you like a napkin with your request?" Nichole smirked. "I say we try a very old trick." Nichole squatted down and grabbed hold of the suit around his ankles. "It's called 'pull really really hard'." Nichole glanced at both Dakbar and Kathryn. "Of course if this doesn't work I'll have to call for backup."
"One, two, three!" Nichole gave a really hard pull, and almost tumbled backwards. Fortunately, she managed to catch herself and land on her bottom.

"You and I need to have a little chat about species dating and mating behavior." Kathryn raised an eyebrow as Nichole scurried off to help Dakbar. Where had that comment come from? She was jogged from her pensieve thoughts by the sound of Nicole thumping back down onto the ground. Eyes widening, Kathryn ran over to assist. "Are you ok?" she asked the other girl, dropping down to her knees in the sand next to her. She glanced up a moment at Dakbar. Was she imagining it, or had he been looking at her? "Dakbar, would you like a napkin with your request?"
"A napkin," he asked, confused, "I don't think a napkin will have any--" It was then that he realized she was joking. Humans and their odd senses of humor...
"One, two, three!"
Dakbar buried his hands in the sand for leverage. The cadet was strong and managed to pull him along in the sand, the wetsuit not budging even an inch. "Careful, you'll--" She plopped down and Kathryn ran over to her.
"Are you ok?"
His eyes followed her as she checked on Nichole, but then...
Their eyes met. Dakbar felt the same way he had felt the first time he saw her, in that diner. His face softened for a moment. However, things had changed. She was not what he thought her to be. He broke the gaze, his hands pulling frantically at the wetsuit. He needed to put some distance between the two of them. "Get me out of this," he snapped, "it is not even the proper size!" His eyes flashed at Kathryn, the anger back. His movements became even more violent and, finally, he stretched out in the sand, reaching for his pack, then pulled out a knife. Holding it in front of him, he could see her face reflected in the blade as he cut himself free.
